The academic subject area, Intercultural German Studies, is concerned with the conceptual, theoretical and methodological bases of interculturality, language and culture description, and the transmission of language and culture in intercultural contexts. It reflects and analyses the context-specific application of methods and scientific knowledge in practical and problem areas, in both academic and business contexts, of transnational culture and knowledge transfer, intercultural language and culture transmission, and intercultural mediation through German as a foreign language.
(2) The study programme aims at the interculturally grounded and interdisciplinarily directed transmission of theoretical and practical knowledge and competencies in specific areas, thereby qualifying its graduates, acting as cultural intermediaries, for the German-Chinese employment market.
(3) The course of study as conceived combines academic training in German studies, with an intercultural and culture studies emphasis, with the preparation of its students for professional occupations while mediating key competencies relevant to practical situations. The language and literary studies units integrate points of view of intercultural and cultural studies, thereby training students to become experts in language and culture. Each of the participating universities has its own study focus, both academic and specific professional training, reflecting the particular educational aims and traditions of the respective German studies departments and tailored to the corresponding professional fields in Germany and China. For Nanjing University, the study focus is on 'education and knowledge cultures', for the Beijing Foreign Language University, it is on 'translating economic and law cultures' and for Göttingen University, it is on 'cultures in contact'. Admission to study at one of these higher education institutions determines, as a rule, the focus of study.
(1) The course is conceived as a German-Chinese dual degree programme and thus offers students the opportunity to complete a structured programme of study at the University of Göttingen and one of the two partner universities.
(2) The study concept envisages Chinese and German students completing their studies together to the greatest possible extent and from the beginning of their studies entering an intercultural study situation, working and learning cross-culturally in teams and tandems. In order to implement this concept, the programme is divided into two study phases.
(3) All students complete the first year of study together at the University of Göttingen. All students complete the second year of study in China, whereby an equal number of Göttingen students continue their studies at the partner universities in Nanjing and Beijing, respectively. The Nanjing and Beijing students return to their own university. The Göttingen students choose one of the partner universities, where they complete the second study year (third and fourth semesters).
(4) The structure of the course of study and the curriculum integrate the structural provisions of the German and Chinese higher education systems. They thereby combine a common subject area as a specific basis, compulsory for all students, with an academic and job-oriented differentiation of the various study focuses at the participating higher education institutions.
Participants spend half of their study programme at the respective partner universities (for Göttingen students this is the third and fourth semesters at Nanjing or Beijing, for Nanjing and Beijing students this is the first and second semesters).
1) Applicants whose native language is not German are required to be proficient in the German language at the level of DSH2 or C1.1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Proof of this proficiency is pursuant to the examination regulations of the German Language Examinations for Entrance to a Higher Education Institution by Foreign Students (DSH). A Bachelor's degree in a relevant area of study may be recognised as proof of the required language proficiency.
(2) The language entrance requirements consist of proficiency in two modern foreign languages, of which at least one must be at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Proof of this proficiency is given through possession of the Certificate of University Higher Education Entrance Qualification or an equivalent language qualification. For students whose native language is not German, German counts as one of the two foreign languages. Students whose native language is not Chinese must demonstrate 80 hours of Chinese lessons before they begin the programme.(1) Prerequisite for entrance to the Master's course of study is the completion of a course of study of at least six semesters, leading to the award of a Bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS credit points, or an equivalent degree in a course of study at a German higher education institution or a higher education institution in a country that is a signatory to the Bologna Agreement, in German Studies or a closely related area with particular suitability for the course of study. The decision as to whether a course of study is in a closely related area is made by the Selection Commission of the Master's course of study at the University of Göttingen.
(2) As an exception, an applicant is eligible for admission if at the time of their application, they have not yet completed their studies but have already obtained at least 162 of the credit points required in a relevant Bachelor's degree programme. In exceptional, well-founded cases, 150 points may suffice.
(3) Applicants must have obtained a Bachelor's degree or equivalent with a grade of at least C (satisfactory).
(4) Equivalent degrees which have been obtained in a country which is not a signatory to the Bologna Agreement must be recognised on the basis of the recommendations of the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) at the Secretariat of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Federal States of Germany (KMK), which is responsible for recognition and evaluation of foreign educational qualifications. The recommendations can be found on the website, The grades of foreign qualifications are to be converted to the German grades system.
The application for admission to the University of Göttingen must be personally signed by the applicant and accompanied by the following documents:
(a) the degree certificate or certificates of the applicant in the form of legally certified copies or, if the originals are not in English or German, legally notarised German or English translations. If a degree certificate is not yet available, a written confirmation of the work performed, credits earned and the average grade is to be supplied;
(b) a curriculum vitae in tabular form, in German, providing a convincing account of the course of education, together with a recent photograph;
(c) if the native language of the applicant is not German, proof of adequate proficiency in the German language;
(d) a declaration of whether the applicant has successfully completed, attempted but failed, or begun but not yet completed this Master's course or a Master's course in a closely related area of study;
(e) a written account in which the motivation of the applicant for undertaking this course of study or their research interest in the area is apparent, and in particular, in which the applicant's specific interest in the intercultural German-Chinese direction of the course of study is explained (Statement of Purpose);
(f) where appropriate, employers' references and evidence of extracurricular activities, achievements outside higher education which are relevant to the student's studies, or particular subject-specific knowledge, where these provide specific indications of the suitability of the applicant for the course of study (e.g. internships in institutions engaged as cultural intermediaries, preferably with relation to Germany/China, Bachelor's thesis on a theme relevant to the course of study, or intercultural experience in a German-Chinese context).
