Career profiles
The graduates of the master’s program in Services of General Interest are qualified for upper and middle management positions where it is necessary to have a solid background in business administration. In the public sector they will be chief officers in larger public authorities, department managers in municipal administration, or employed at a district, state or federal level, or in outsourced companies. Graduates who have specialized in Social Services Management or Health Services Management will be well equipped for a career in social or health service institutions. A further career could be as a consultant for the upper management of public administration where complex specialist tasks must be undertaken, including coordination and planning, as well as staff positions in larger health and social services institutions such as in controlling, marketing, communications or personnel departments. Consultancy positions in the public sector or in the social and health services would also pose an interesting professional challenge.
Focus
The course provides personal management competence, competencies in the field of strategic decision making, and in the operative management of enterprises. The ability to think creatively and to implement innovations and deal responsibly with the resources of the institution or enterprise are a further emphasis of the course. These comprehensive skills are complemented with specialist knowledge in the fields of Public Management, Social Services Management and Health Services Management.
Organization
Students are required to be present for one whole week per semester as well as during course time on Friday afternoons (2-8 p.m.) and Saturdays (8.30 a.m.- 4 p.m.) and Wednesday evenings when necessary (5-10 p.m.). This is to make allowance for the situation of students who are both studying and working. Additionally, blended learning elements reduce the time the students have to be present. The course of study specializing in Public Management started in October 2007, and in 2009/10 or 2010/11 the program for those interested in Social Services Management and Health Services Management will be offered.
