Since the Winter Semester of 2007/08, the Centre for Medieval Studies at Albert-Ludwig University, Freiburg, has offered the interdisciplinary Master's program "Medieval and Renaissance Studies".
The program is supported by more than 10 departments and institutes, spanning 5 university faculties.
It is designed for students from Germany and abroad whose previous academic work has included an emphasis on medieval studies.
Through specialization in a particular area, students of this program will deepen their knowledge of their chosen field. At the same time, through participation in relevant courses in neighbouring fields and interdisciplinary training in medieval studies methods, they will acquire a methodologically and theoretically broad scientific view of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
The two-year program is designed for students from Germany and abroad whose undergraduate degree included an emphasis on medieval and/or Renaissance studies. Students can continue to pursue their previous academic specialization at one of the best universities and in one of the most beautiful regions of Germany, while at the same time becoming acquainted with and putting into practice methods and theories of related disciplines. In addition to this, they will benefit from the inclusion of a practice-oriented module in the program, which will further enhance their qualification for occupations both in and beyond university.
The two-ýear program is organized into three sections: the curriculum individuale, curriculum commune and curriculum particulare.
In the curriculum individuale, students choose their personal area of specialization from more than 10 disciplinary fields. Their Master's work will then be carried out within this area of expertise.
The curriculum commune encompasses courses in interdisciplinary methods, lecture cycles and a module of practice-oriented activities, which all students of the program must complete.
In the curriculum particulare, interdisciplinary knowledge and methods are fostered through participation in courses representing the whole spectrum of medieval studies offered at the University of Freiburg.
Currently courses from more than 15 departments, institutes and faculties are available for students to choose from.
The official degree requirements and a detailed course-of-study plan can be found on the website of the Gemeinsamen Kommission der Universität Freiburg (
There you will find the "Prüfungsordnung" (Degree requirements) and the "Studienverlaufsplan" (Course-of-study plan)
Prerequisite for admission is an above-average Bachelor's degree (or comparable qualification), with an emphasis on subjects related to "Medieval and Renaissance Studies", as well as language competence in both German and English. Competence in Latin must also be demonstrated. The detailed (and legally binding) admissions regulations may be found in the Amtlichen Bekanntmachungen der Universität Freiburg (2007, Nr. 14, 4.4.2007), which can be downloaded directly as a PDF-file here: (in German only).
