The four-semester master’s degree treats the knowledge acquired in the Technical Mathematics bachelor programme in more depth. Industrial Mathematics comprises the mathematical modelling of technical and scientific phenomena, theoretical investigations for the solutions of these models and the characteristics of the solutions as well as the development, analysis and implementation of efficient numerical procedures to determine approximate solutions. This also includes critical discussion of the obtained results, i.e. evaluation of the numerical simulation.
Working as an Industrial Mathematician
Graduates of the master’s course in Industrial Mathematics will have a broad range of professional opportunities at their disposal. The ability to take part in interdisciplinary co-operation makes them much sought-after employees in industrial research and development. Numerical simulation is playing an ever greater role in many fields. Applications are to be found, for instance, in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, aerospace technology and electrical engineering, as well as increasingly in medicine.
In lectures on applied analysis and numerical mathematics the mathematical knowledge required for modelling and simulating technical and scientific problems will be treated in depth and expanded. A personal profile can be developed through the choice of technical optional subjects from the areas of solid-body and fluid mechanics, theoretical physics and electrical engineering. Mathematical methods will be combined with application-specific tasks in lectures, seminars and projects on mathematical modelling and numerical simulation. The course of study is concluded with a master’s thesis in the fourth semester. Graduates will be awarded the academic degree of “Diplom-Ingenieurin” or “Diplom-Ingenieur”, which is internationally equivalent to a “Master of Science” (“MSc”).
Candidates for admission to the Master's Programme must have successfully completed a relevant Bachelor's programme or other equivalent degree programmme.
