The master’s programme in Biotechnology builds on the content of a bachelor’s programme in a suitable subject to the amount of at least 180 ECTS credits, for instance, Chemistry or Molecular Biology.
As a key technology of the 21st century, biotechnology deals with the utilisation of biosystems which serve to implement applications in industry, agriculture, environment and medicine. The heavily interdisciplinary-oriented education focuses on the development of expertise for the technological treatment of biosystems. By the same token, the education communicates process-technical expertise for the development and operation of biotechnological applications and methods. Current and future-oriented fields of molecular biotechnology, environmental and foodstuffs technology, enzyme technology and biocatalysis as well as bioprocess engineering make up a part of this course of studies.
The entire master’s degree programme comprises 120 ECTS credits. Graduates are awarded the degree of Diplomingenieurin or Diplomingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.), which is internationally equivalent to a Master of Science (MSc).
Working as a Biotechnologist
Graduates of Biotechnology work in a strongly interdisciplinary subject area. Industrial biotechnology, production of chemicals and biocatalytic processes, pharmaceutical research, foodstuffs technology, environmental biotechnology, the fields of agriculture, research institutes and authorities count among the fields of activity of biotechnologists. Planning and carrying out independent experiments and analysis and subjecting potential solutions to critical examination demand singular problem-solving skills in research and biotechnological development.
