Accommodation
Incoming students apply for accommodation after they have been accepted to study at LUT. The accommodation is arranged by LOAS (Lappeenrannan Opiskelija-asuntosäätiö, Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation). The housing application will be filled in on-line on LOAS' website.
The student flat is usually a “cellular apartment”, a flat shared between 2-3 students. Each student has a room of his/her own with a lockable door and a shared kitchen and toilet/washing facilities. Each room is furnished with a bed, a large desk, a desk lamp, a chair, a bookshelf and a wardrobe. The kitchen is fully furnished with a kitchen table and chairs and also has a refrigerator, cupboards, a sink, an electric cooker and an oven. However, kitchen utensils are not provided. Bathrooms are fitted with a shower, a sink and a toilet. Mattresses are included in the rent in some of the buildings. For more details, please see LOAS website.
The shared facilities in LOAS buildings usually comprise a laundry room equipped with washing machines, dryers and an iron. Each building also contains a sauna that can be used free of charge. There are common sauna hours for all the tenants in the building between certain hours once a week, with separate saunas for men and women. Tenants can also reserve a sauna for personal use once a week. LOAS buildings also contain additional facilities, including storage space for each tenant, and bike shelters. In each LOAS building near the main entrance are the bulletin boards on which you can find useful information including sauna timetables and a list of all tenants.
The rent for rooms in LOAS apartments is based on floor space of the room, the age of the building and how recently the building has been renovated. The rent can vary between EUR 200 and EUR 375, and you are also required to pay a deposit of EUR 200. Rent for LOAS apartments must be paid by the 5th day of each month.
LOAS apartments are not mixed. Male and female students can live in the same apartment on request only. Pets are allowed in LOAS apartments as long as they do not disturb neighbours.

Average cost of living
Students have to pay for their books and other materials, plus their accommodation and living expenses. Individual’s average total monthly living expenses amount to approximately EUR 700. The cost of living in Finland is about the same as in other EU countries. Remember that a student card enables you to get meals and other services at student prices wherever you are studying, along with reductions in the cost of e.g. transport, museums and various cultural events and recreational activities. Do not forget personal and leisure expenses. There are many things to see and to do in Finland, and you may also want to visit the neighbouring countries during your stay.
The compact campus area located by the beautiful Lake Saimaa offers LUT students all the student services needed. Many student appartments are located within walking distance, and the university premises offer everything from laboratories to library services, restaurants to health care services – all this literally under one roof.
The Student Union of Lappeenranta University of Technology, LTKY for short, unites its roughly 4300 student members and promotes their academic and personal well-being. In addition to making sure that the students’ voice is heard in the decision making of the university, LTKY organises a large variety of events around the year. More than 30 clubs offer a range of extra-curricular activities, including sports, cultural events, etc.
Lappeenranta - East meets West
Lappeenranta, a city of 72,000 residents located in Southeast Finland, combines cosy small town atmosphere with full-scale urban comforts. Our international guests soon pick up on the relaxed vibe and are eager to get the most of their “Lappeenranta Experience”. The locals know the story: as the town weaves its slow magic on the arriving students, pretty soon they do not want to leave at all.
Eastern Finland hospitality is legendary, even in a country known for its warm, welcoming smiles. At LUT, a lot of effort has been directed at student services (conveniently located on the university campus, of course) – just because we want you to feel at home from Day One.
In addition to the breathtaking landscape of Lake Saimaa, Lappeenranta embraces its historical position between the East and West. Lappeenranta is both a geographical and and academic gateway from the European Union to Russia. As it stands, the Lappeenranta University of Technology is only about 230 kilometers from the third largest metropolis in Europe – St. Petersburg – and there is an equal distance to Helsinki, capital of Finland.
Excellent public transportation connections as well as direct international flights make Lappeenranta easy to reach. And recently, a whole lot of people have been in an awful hurry to get here – because they know there is something good waiting down the road.
