Klagenfurt University draws its sense of identity - nomen est omen - from its geographical location in the south of Austria, at the heart of the Alps-Adriatic region.
One of the university´s priorities is the continuing expansion and development of its existing collaboration and networks with the higher education and research institutions of Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. These regions have long been opened up by roads and cars, so now we can make real as well as mental journeys through them, traverse them backwards and forwards, quickly or at a more leisurely pace.
The short geographical distances between the universities make for easier contacts in the shared research and economic area of the Alps-Adriatic region. For students this means they will be picking up the languages spoken in these regions as they pass through them, so to speak: without borders/brez meja/senza confini. Joint projects, the series of conferences on cultural matters entitled "kultur.räume", residential study visits and guest lectures given by researchers and university teachers are all examples of this collaboration.
The cultural areas that we have in common, the areas of shared experience, common economic areas and borders all cry out for comparative analysis through interdisciplinary research by cultural and economic experts in the fields and processes of geography, history and economics, as well as in ecology.
