Services & Facilities

The University of Duisburg-Essen is highly committed to offering students the best possible conditions in which to study and work. With a range of different measures, it helps students to pursue and complete their studies successfully, promotes young talent, and takes the differing backgrounds and needs of its students into account.

Studying: one of the most important tools the UDE uses to support students during their studies is its comprehensive mentoring system. This special programme is designed to lend students precisely the individual support they need in every faculty, particularly during the critical early stages of their courses and at exam time. In concrete terms, this means that every student is assigned a mentor, usually a member of the teaching staff, and has access to various special advisory and support services. The UDE mentoring system raises the level of satisfaction among students and helps them to achieve their own goals and develop their personal and academic skills. At the same time, it is a good way to identify particularly able students and foster their talent.

Scholarships: any institution expecting high performance from its students must also be willing to invest in it. The UDE therefore takes part - very successfully - in the North Rhine-Westphalia Scholarship Programme. Since its inception in 2009, this programme has been supporting talented and ambitious students from at home and abroad. The participating universities are required to obtain one half of funding from sponsors, and the state government contributes the remaining half. The UDE selects its scholarship candidates primarily by achievement, but it also takes other aspects into account such as social engagement, parenthood, alternative educational routes or a migrant background. This still young programme is being extended year on year. Some students are also exempted from paying student fees. The UDE waives or reduces the fees according to certain social criteria, an offer which is taken up by no less than one in six students.

Student fees: the entire student fees flow directly into improving the quality of teaching and study programmes, for example by appointing more academic staff and tutors, buying additional books or investing in media technology. Five percent of total income is allocated to the university's own foundation, the Duisburg-Essen University Foundation, a fledgling institution that is set to play an increasingly important role as its capital grows. In 2007, the UDE was the first university in Germany to establish a university foundation. Its task is to optimise study conditions. Interest earnings are invested in a variety of measures decided upon by the executive board, which is made up of equal numbers of university and student representatives. The Foundation also assists when students are writing their final thesis or if they find themselves in dire financial circumstances; it provides grants to young parents, for example, and awards scholarships to talented students with no financial means.
