Informationen zur Universität

The TUHH is one of Germany’s youngest and most successful universities. Plans for a university of technology in the Süderelbe area of Hamburg go back to the 1920s. Fifty years later, in 1978, the Hamburg University of Technology came into being, its mission to promote structural change in the region.

Between 1982 and 2005, a campus university grew up in the south of Hamburg, its modern buildings blending into the terrain. With its green spaces and trees, the campus is an inviting place to linger. Gradually, the TUHH extended its site northward to the edge of the Schwarzenberg.

Research activities began in 1980 and teaching in 1982/83. Now, the TUHH has around 100 professors and 1,150 employees (including 500 academic staff, inclusive of those with salaries from third-party funding). With around 5,000 students, this makes for an excellent staff-student ratio. There is plenty of space on campus for encounters and fruitful exchanges of ideas. The atmosphere is easy to describe – young, innovative, unconventional, original and creative, an ideal atmosphere for developing new ideas in engineering sciences.

The founding principles of the TUHH are unique in Germany. The priority of research, an interdisciplinary approach, innovation, regionalism and internationalism are the obligatory foundations for what we do. Research, teaching and technology transfer are centered around the guiding theme of developing technology for people.

Services & Facilities

Scholarships for all students

Scholarships are a handy way to finance your studies because they are grants and must not as a rule be repaid. In addition to scholarships for gifted and talented students many other scholarships are available subject to terms and conditions.

This section features foundations that fund students in different subject areas. Some of them concentrate on funding engineering or research projects.

Good and affordable accommodation!

Finding a suitable and affordable room in Hamburg at the beginning of the semester is not always easy. We recommend, therefore, that you start looking even before receiving your admission.
Whether you are looking for a private room or a place in a student residence the "Accommodation Info-Centre" from the Studierendenwerk will help you to find what you are looking for.

Disabled Students

The requirements governing university access for disabled students vary at the different colleges. Therefore, we recommend people with a disability or chronic illness interested in studying to find out before enrolling what the conditions are at the intended place of study.
The Studierendenwerk Hamburg offers advice and individual support for general and disabled related social problems.

Student Life

We provide all colleges with social services, help to shape college life, offer students a variety of services and are competent partners for the colleges.
We aim not just to meet student needs of today, but also to set trends and innovations for the future in areas such as catering, housing, funding and social affairs. Our services strive to combine economy with ecology.
Students become members of the Studierendenwerk by making a current contribution of EUR 51,- and can influence the development of the Studierendenwerk by joining the committee.
The main aspects of our work are in CATERING (in 13 cafeterias and 13 cafés/bistros up to 21,000 guests are catered for per day), in STUDENT HOUSING (22 halls of residence with some 3,700 places in rooms and flats) and in FUNDING - BAföG - (approx. 66 million Euro in funding per year). We also run a General Social Counselling, five nurseries and other social institutions.

Public Transport Pass
Students and interns from other federal states and abroad can get an HVV public transport pass from the Studierendenwerk, granting them monthly tickets at a reduced price. The condition is that their stay in Hamburg is a necessity for their studies. Students who live in Hamburg but study in the surroundings also receive their HVV public transport pass from the Studierendenwerk.
German-French Social Identity Card
This identity card enables German students under 35 to benefit from the services of French student services at reasonable rates. This is also valid for meals in the cafeterias for accommodation in the halls of residence.
