Informationen zur Universität

RES´s main academic objectives and goals are to offer excellent educational programs in renewable energy science and technology plus strengthen the future cooperation between leading Icelandic and international academic and research institutions in the utilization of renewable energy.

RES | the School for Renewable Energy Science was established in the spring of 2006. RES started its M.Sc. Degree Program in February 2008. The graduate program is offered in cooperation with the University of Iceland and the University of Akureyri, as well as in partnership with a number of leading technical universities and institutions around the world.

Iceland has much to offer when it comes to the increasingly important field of renewable energy science, technology and renewable energy policy implementation. Over the last few decades a vast knowledge has built up in Iceland in the utilization of geothermal (high and low temperatures) and hydropower resources, and more recently in the production, storage and demonstration of hydrogen as an energy carrier in the transportation sector. Increased emphasis in Iceland on natural resource bio technology has also created important knowledge in the production of; methane, biodiesel, ethanol/methanol and biohydrogen from waste and/or biomass.

During the course of the 20th Century, Iceland changed from being among Europe´s poorest countries, dependent upon peat and imported coal for its energy, to a country with the world´s highest living standard. In Iceland, all stationary energy and about 81 % of primary energy comes from indigenous renewable energy sources which is the highest of any country.

In particular, Icelandic researchers and consultants are regarded as one of the world´s leading energy experts in assessing the energy-capacity potential of high and low temperature geothermal fields, geothermal exploration and drilling techniques, as well as all other aspects of geothermal energy utilization. Icelandic researchers have coordinated and participated in a number of EU funded research projects dealing with alternative transportation fuels and are now actively working on eliminating Iceland´s dependence on fossil fuels (currently 19% of primary energy) in the transportation and fishing sectors. Therefore, Iceland could well become the first nation in the world where 100% of primary energy consumption is solely from renewable energy sources.

Services & Facilities

RES provides state-of-the-art teaching facilities and high quality student support services. Our classrooms are modern and equipped with the latest IT and instructional technologies, with fast internet connections. RES has also recently established a teaching Laboratory in Material Science in support of the M.Sc. Degree Program with both XRD and XRF analytical instruments, in addition to microscopes and sample preparation equipment.

Through our affiliation with University of Akureyri and University of Iceland (in Reykjavik) our M.Sc. degree students have access to research labs at both these universities while doing their master thesis research. RES students also do their thesis research at leading Icelandic energy and engineering companies. Some students do their thesis research outside Iceland, and then in research laboratories at one of our many partner universities, or energy/transportation companies (e.g. Ford Motor Company and Toyota Motor) in Europe and North-America.

Our students have access to all student support services of the University of Akureyri and become members of the University's Student Union. This includes access to the University Library and Cafeteria.

RES students stay in recently constructed, fully furnished, one or two bedroom apartments only 10 min. walk from the classrooms, the RES Administration Office, and the University of Akureyri Campus.

A number of sport and recreational facilities are also nearby. This includes large outdoor geothermal swimming pool; ski resort; health clubs and gyms; indoor and outdoor soccer fields; handball, basketball and volleyball courts; and a skating hall.

Student Life

RES encourages all students to maintain a positive and healthy lifestyle. The physical, psychological and social benefits lay the foundation for optimum learning potential and a reduction in everyday stress. A healthy diet, exercise and participation in social activities will strengthen the student´s capacity for learning and will benefit the student´s overall well-being.

RES encourages all its students to become involved in some extracurricular activities during their studies so they can enjoy the various cultural and social experiences that Akureyri has to offer, this includes sports and recreational activities.

RES students are also members of UNAK´s Student Union or FHSA that organizes various social events throughout the year. The RES Office also sponsors social events that highlight the importance of diversity in our student population-celebrating cultural, gender and ethnic differences.

Accreditation

RES | the School for Renewable Energy Science graduates its students through its affiliation with the University of Akureyri and the University of Iceland. Both Universities are accredited higher education institutions.

Previous laws on universities gave the Minister of Education, Science and Culture the power to license the operation of privately funded universities. State funded universities operated according to special laws for each institution. The new Higher Education Act covers all universities operating according to the laws’ definitions, regardless of their operational form, and the Minister can license these institutions given that they fulfill certain conditions. A university’s recognition is linked to a given set of fields of knowledge or subsets of these fields. The universities are then free to decide what courses they offer within the fields of knowledge for which they are recognized.
