Established: In 1765 as the „K. and K. Horse Curing and Operation School“ according to the founding edict by the Empress Maria Theresia. Teaching began in December 1767.

Location: 21nd district in the north of Vienna (since 1996, before 1996 in the 3rd district)

Campus: 47 buildings spread over an area of 15 ha, completed in 1996.

Research Research is concentrated into four main areas or profile lines:

* Profile line 1 - Regulation of physiological and pathophysiological processes.
* Profile line 2 – Infection and prevention
* Profile line 3 – Biomedicine and biotechnology
* Profile line 4 – Food safety and risk analysis

University Structure Research at the University is divided up among 5 departments. The departments include both institutes and clinics.

The Senate is an executive board including representatives of the university's academic staff, students, and administration staff. The Senate's decisions concern e.g. curricula and examinations.

The Council supervises and regulates university policy. In following the recommendations of the rector and in co-operation with the Senate the council develops goals and strategies for the future of the university.
